Or the old college trick is to use plain white toothpaste to fill small holes. Most dents and dings in walls are a bit larger and are caused by a door knob hitting it to one too many times or whatever. How it got there is not important except to remember not to do that anymore. I like to use a spackle paste and not the light weight spackle. It is easier to work and will let you do more.

A small tub of spackle paste and a 1-1 ½ inch putty knife, plastic or metal knife is up to you and your budget. When filling in the dent remember to only fill the dent. Many times people will want to slop it on 2-3 times larger than the problem area and just create a bigger mess. So fill only the dent/ding itself. Take the knife and scrape away the excess.

Now let the patch dry completely. If there is a lot of excess around the dent/ding filling in some of the good texture a sponge can be used to wipe this away and leave the old texture in place. Once it is dry it is time to try your hand at matching the surrounding drywall texture. With the corner of the putty knife I will take small dabs of spackle and apply them onto the patched area.

When the dabs are half dry I’ll take the putty knife and “lightly” drag it across them to knock them down a bit so they will match the existing texture in the surrounding area. If the “bumps” texture is small and tight together another technique is to take some of the spackle paste and in a separate container mix it with some water to make it sort of runny, a teaspoon of water at a time to cut down the thickness of the spackle paste will allow you to control how thick/thin you want it to become.

To apply the texture crinkle up some plastic wrap like a grocery bag, and dip it into the mixture and dab it onto the patch. You can always add more texture later so remember that less is more. When this is dry you can take a small swipe at it with some sand paper or a damp sponge. Again less is more when sanding too. When all is dry it can now be painted. And if it was caused by a door knob banging into the wall install a door stop.

First check the opening to see that the sill and header are level and the jambs are plumb. Measure the opening then measure the window to be installed to make sure it is the right one. Next we need to install the flashing paper which will be either a kraft paper which is to layers with a tar film center it is a durable paper commonly used in window installation.

Another popular choice is the use of roll of bituthene. Bituthene is a rubber product with an adhesive on one side. It can be purchased in 8”, 12”, or 48” wide rolls. For windows we want to use the 12” of either the kraft paper or bituthene. The bituthene cost more than the kraft paper but is a much more superior product and a lot of building and safety departments either prefer it or require it to be used.

The window opening has four sides and when you start the flashing you start at the bottom or window sill. You will want the paper to run past the opening a good 12” on both sides. So if the opening is 4’ wide cut a piece 6’ long. Since the top is the same width as the bottom cut a second piece the same length and save it for after the window has been installed. Next measure and cut the side pieces of flashing doing the same 12” running past the opening on both the top and bottom. If using bituthene make sure not to peal off the backing that covers the adhesive.

The combo of the rubber and adhesive will create a seal around any penetrations such as the screws and staples. In this instance the adhesive is not needed until the siding or stucco vapor barrier is installed. Okay back to the bottom piece, turn it over and cut through the backing cover only about a 2” wide strip and remove it. Now the bituthene can stick to the wood window sill remembering it needs to run past the 12” on both sides. Make sure the flashing is either flush to the top of the sill too. Next remove a 2”-3” strip of the backing from the side pieces and install them remembering to run the flashing 12” past the openings.

The side pieces will go over the top of the bottom piece. The kraft paper will be installed the same way but attached to the framing using the stapler with the ½” staples. The bituthene can also be better held in place with the staples as well.  Now that the opening is flashed on the bottom first and then the sides second and overlapping the bottom piece you are ready to caulk the window.
Take a look at the window to make sure which side goes up and which side faces the exterior and which side faces the interior of the home.

Remove the screen and vent [sliding part] from the window. Now liberally apply the caulking to the flange of the window itself start at the bottom corner and work your way up, keeping the bead closer to the outer edge than not. Caulk the top and down the other side. Make sure there are NO gaps in the bead of caulking. Now with a helper on the outside and you the installer on the inside set the window in the opening. As the helper hold the window in the opening you step back to check the side reveals to make sure
they are even. You should not be able to raise or lower the bottom of today’s windows to adjust the fit or reveal.

The modern vinyl window is very heavy and needs to sit on a solid base like the wood window sill. This is why we made sure it was level and solid before we began this whole process. Now that the side reveals are satisfactory have the helper attach the frame at the lower side and opposite of the vent opening with a screw. Repeat at the top side then once again one screw in the lower side of the vent opening. The flanges on the window usually have a slot cut out or indentation from the manufacture for the screw or nail.

Do not screw it so tight that the flange is broken or compromised. Now reinstall the vent and almost close it leaving a small ¼” gap. Use this gap to adjust the side reveal. Next slide the vent back and forth a couple times to be sure that it slides easily. Check the top reveal and using the pry bar adjust it as necessary remembering to slide the vent back and forth once again to check if it is binding at all. So four to five screws is more the enough to secure the new window. Last we take the set aside piece of flashing kraft paper or bituthene and install it so that it covers fully the top window flange. If using the bituthene you can remove the whole adhesive cover so that it will stick to the header and top window flange creating a tight seal and bond.

There you have it a new window installed correctly to keep the water out.

For starters installing new energy efficient windows will totally make a difference in your home. The window is the thinnest part of your home between you and nature. And upgrading will increase that separation without wrecking your view.

Checking to see if you need a building permit, most counties and cities require that a permit be attained prior to the start of replacing windows. Getting a permit is not that hard and for windows not that expensive. It should cost somewhere in the range of $40-$80 bucks. Also while there ask about any rebates available for making your home “greener” Getting a permit for window replacement is an over the counter type of permit, meaning you can walk in the building official at the counter can approve and issue the permit on the spot.

If you have never gotten a permit before you may need to make two visits. 1. To find out the requirements are. 2. To submit your application for the permit. If using a contractor they will be able to get the permit for you. But they will charge you for it too. Their time and the fee can add up quickly. So to save a couple hundred bucks you can do it your self.

Choosing the right window for the part of the country you live in is very important. Although these windows all look the same they are engineered to differing specs. I did a remodel once and the local city building department told me what the minimum window spec. was allowed but when I went to one of the big box stores in the same city the replacement windows they sold did not meet the minimum requirement.

But they could order the windows I needed but they would cost more than what was currently in the store. Bait and switch? I don’t know, more likely they did not know. But doing your home work is important. There are many different brands and styles of window replacements to choose from. You just need to take a little time and do some price comparisons because these can vary wildly.
This is not a real easy DIY project.

You will need some proficiency in the use of some of the tools – Tape measure, Pry bar, Exterior/Window Caulking and Caulking Gun, Finish Nails, Hammer, Screw Gun, Zinc Grabber Screws, Carpenters Square, Straight Edge [a level can double as a straight edge], Circular Saw and a Sander if replacing wood windows.
After choosing where to get the windows from, find out how they require the opening to be measured from.

This is the singular most important part. Too big or too small just means more work or delays. After measuring order the windows. Please wait for the new windows to be delivered to the home before removing the old ones and when they do arrive and you’re chomping at the bit to start only remove one window and install the new one. Start in the back of the home or a non-essential room and when you get to the front of the home you will have the process down pat and it will look nice and perfect.  When removing the first old window take the time to see how it is put together.

Like everything it was put together in steps. You now have to reverse those steps. Once the window has been removed take the new window and set it in the opening to ensure of a good fit. If it all checks out then following the window manufacture installation instructions. Typically this will require you to possibly pre-drill holes in the sides for the mounting screws and where to caulk the windows. Now place the new window back into the opening with the manufacture arrow stickers pointing up.
